Gibby Haynes interviewed on Fox News sometime in 2009 before their last tour and before the ATP show in England. The interviewer introduced him by saying "he is as talented as I am turgid." This was taped during that sweater vest phase that I'm hoping he's done with.

Politically Incorrect, 1997
The subject is rock lyrics on Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, featuring guests Gibby Haynes, Weird Al Yankovic, Meshell Ndegeocello and Stephen Bishop, or as the guy who posted these videos described them: "Meshell Ndegeocello and four white dudes."
According to Gibby, the lyrics are the important part and the music was all stolen from some black guys in East Texas.

Congratulations Little Mr. Haynes
That there is a little Gibby about to grow up and become a big Gibby is a little scary. I have no idea who the wife is other than that her name is Melissa and I will conjecture that she has a great sense of humor and is patient and kind. The baby seems to have been born sometime in March 2010. A Brooklynite who twitters saw Mr. Haynes carrying an empty baby carrier in mid-April. I hope he didn't lose the baby already, that would be quick.
Congratulations are in order, may the adventure begin. If you are so inclined to get them a gift, they appear to be registered at Green Cradle.
The tyke's name according to this anonymous commenter who is in the know is Satchel Moses, aka Satchmo. You have but 15 1/2 years until you take the SAT little man. Good luck.

Interview of the Month
The Gigantic Magazine published a fairly hysterical interview/conversation/descent into madness between the writer Joe Wenderoth and Gibby Haynes.
Here is an excerpt, where Gibby answers the question "Are you able to undress a clown in your mind?"
No, because clowns or clown is pure. Clown comes undressed! Clown is terror. Clown is complete and cannot be altered. Clown is indivisible. Clown divided by 2 is clown times 2. Clown is noise and silence. Clown is sky and horizon. Clown is clear and colored. Clown am become death. Destroyer of worlds! Clown is all and nothing. Clown isn't. Clown is only.

Ultrabunny
So, here I am on myspace after looking for a band I saw play today, which led me to another band called Ultrabunny. The photo of their album cover struck me, as well as the tidbit that they issue their music on vinyl (or are they selling old records from their basement from 1985?) and wanted to see what they actually looked like, since I didn't think they sounded like two skinny naked girls. I randomly clicked on their photos, and came across Mr. Bunny with Mr. Haynes, on the subway (scroll down almost to the bottom of the page).

Gogol Bordello
Gibby plays Goofy's Concern with Gogol Bordello in a surprise appearance at Webester Hall in Dec 09. He pretty much molests all the band members, but they do a decent rendition of one of my favorite songs.
Right at the end you get a good view of the tramp stamp on his back, and as for his front, well, avert your eyes.

Gibby Haynes Wears a Tie and a Sweater Vest
A sight that makes my eyes sad. But the tie is pretty nice, as much as I wish it were on someone else's neck.

Showpaper Benefit to Display Gibby's Watercolors
Ok I finally have the information from ShowPaper about this event from Katie Rush.
You can rest assured that Gibby's paintings will ABSOLUTELY be on display for public viewing at Kidd Yellin on the night of Saturday September 26th starting at 7pm. It is a benefit for ShowPaper, the all-ages indie music and art publication. Gibby generously lent his PA system for the bands that will be performing-- he unfortunately won't be in attendance (he's on tour with Butthole Surfers)...but what a great, generous guy :) Hope you can make it! It is at 133 Imlay Street, Bklyn. This benefit (with Gibby paintings and all) should be fantastic. Here's the Facebook invite for more info.

Gibby's Paintings on Display in Red Hook
Katie Rush has written to tell us that Gibby's paintings are still on display at Kidd Yellin in Red Hook. The problem remains, however, that there are no opening hours listed on their website and no response to my email inquiry. Quite frankly, making the trek to Red Hook without being sure that it is open, seems like it could lead to a big, wasted day.
In other news, she also says that Gibby's paintings will be on display at a September 26 benefit at Showpaper which is in Queens. I can't find a confirmation of this to find out the times or exact address on their MySpace page. There is an address of 915 Wyckoff Ave on their Facebook page, but I am unsure if this would be the same venue as their benefit.
I will continue to pursue these and other important questions.

Banned from ATP for being Assholes
According to an interview with Village Voice, and summed up by Brooklyn Vegan, the organizers of All Tomorrow's Parties, who run rock concert festivals in weird out of the way locations where you would likely go to summer camp, have blacklisted the Butthole Surfers, Killing Joke and the Black Lips from future concerts. While he didn't elaborate on why the Buttholes & Killing Joke were included in the list, he said that the Black Lips broke into a chalet (ie in the US we call it a cabin or hotel room) and stole stuff. What kind of stuff I wonder. Not the first time these bands have been called assholes, and I'm guessing not the last time either.
The next ATP festival is at Kutshers in Monticello, where, as a kid in summer camp, I went ice skating (a sort of thrill in the summer), fell down, and had a fat lip for a week.

Damn this internet, they dates are being released one at a time. This updating is getting boring, but at least it's a pretty complete list. SO WHERE IS NY? Huh? I know that tickets will go on sale whilst I am on vacation. If someone gets me 2 tickets to NY show I will buy you a beer (and pay you back).

October and the Butthole Surfers

Start making plans for October because two dates have already been announced: October 1st the Butthole Surfers will be playing at Pop Montreal with Dinosaur, Jr. and Lou Barlow+The Missingmen.
Then on to the Riot Fest in Chicago on October 7th, opening night, they will be playing with The House That Gloria Vanderbilt, and some other very interesting bands in the following days.
One week later on October 14th, head to Portland's McMenamins Crystal Ballroom for an all ages show (bring the kiddies!). Then October 16th in San Francisco at The Grand At The Regency Center and October 18th at Club Nokia in Los Angeles.

Gibby will sing on a track called "Death Bells." Additionally, Will Oldham is involved with this project ("Bonnie Prince Billy") who is something of a current phenom and keeps popping up on my radar. I tried listening, but I just didn't get the hype.

Butthole Surfers Ringtones
Ok, this is worth spending my hard earned cabbage on. Dracula from Houston on my phone, this makes me so happy.

Kidd Yellin
According to this link, Gibby Haynes will be in the "project room" of a Red Hook, Brooklyn gallery called Kidd Yellin. The opening was yesterday (once again I don't find these things out until it's too late) but the website doesn't say what is IN the project room. Gibby singing to himself? Video projections with recorded sounds? It's anybody's guess.
The paintings by Gavin Anderson look like they are well worth the trek to Brooklyn. The show is on through August so maybe I'll figure out how to get there and check it out soon.

Arggh, Gibby is guest dj tonight at Beauty Bar on 14th Street and I am not able to go. Once again, foiled by laziness.

May 3, 1987 in Trenton
This is a most entertaining story about a Butthole Surfers gig in Trenton that has the following elements:
- dog food on the floor
- all ages show with the ubiquitous dancing women and crazy films
- bouncers unplugging the show
- rubbing alcohol and fire
- How Gibby got his hands on all those 16mm medical films
- riotous behaviour by all
My favorite part of the interview where Gibby explains how the shows were actually an overcompensation because he wasn't confident in his singing:

My favorite part of the interview where Gibby explains how the shows were actually an overcompensation because he wasn't confident in his singing:
Gibby Haynes: I was in charge of the show. I thought if I couldn’t really sing, then I might as well put on a show. So at first it was smoke and strobes. And then it was lots of smoke and lots of strobes. Completely fill the club with smoke until you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face, with a pulsing, bright-as-shit light that would make you vomit and convulse. We would make effigies out of newspaper and then tear them up in the strobe light, which was cool because it looked like you were tearing a human apart. We would dress up the dummies the same way we were dressed, and then jump behind an amp and throw out the dummy and rip it up.

Photos from Rock, Paper Scissors
Not very good photos, but it's all I could find. Plus, no captions to identify the artist. Overall though it looks pretty interesting, very rock and roll.

Rock Paper Scissors - More Information
More better information on this upcoming show in Los Angeles. It is a 3 day multi-media affair featuring some of the biggest names in rock n roll. If you live in the area, it is worth checking out.

Rock Paper Scissors Art Show
Gibby Haynes is part of a group show opening Feb 28 in LA featuring rock star artists. It is unclear to me what format this will be, is it performance art, or actual I-can-hold-it-in-my-hand-and-touch-it art?

Touch & Go is Gone
It was announced today that the Butthole Surfer's former label, Touch & Go, has shuttered. The music industry is in a shambles, and it's not surprising that small labels are having trouble keeping up. Sounds like big labels are having trouble too.
Here is the story of what transpired between them. Buttholes suffered from a lot of bad publicity, and for the first time in my life I saw musicians siding with the record label over the band. It leaves a bad taste in everybody's mouth.

Eating Egyptian
A Village Voice food critic takes Gibby and his wife to an Egyptian restaurant for what sounds like quite the meal. The rich just get richer with their free meals and swag.

Who Was in My Room Last Night?
I've had a bad day with too much ranting about other things so I come here to write a little about the Buttholes to calm myself down.
I did get to the gym and managed to stay there for a full 10 minutes, when usually I can manage only 9. Independent Worm Saloon is one of my favorites to play while at the gym, even if I only make it through the first two or three songs before going home.
Purists like to deride this album because it marks the Butthole's foray into big record label-dom. But I disagree. I think it's a brilliant album, about as perfect as you can get. Even the worst song on the album is called The Annoying Song, because it is annoying, and you know it before you listen, because they said so.
Produced by John Paul Jones (of Led Zeppelin fame), he managed to find a way to present the incredible genius of the Buttholes, cleaning them up, making them presentable for prime time. While this album doesn't have the noise and garage quality that is endearing in their independently produced records, it doesn't completely lose those qualities either. The arrangements are more organized so that their musical talent shines. Everything about this band is amazing, but you have to have either seen them live or really listen carefully, with headphones, to their early albums to truly get them. If you haven't done either, then you will never understand.
Independent Worm Saloon is more accessible, easier to listen to, and thus more mainstream, but without the gloss that could turn the corner into horribleness, as happened with Weird Revolution, where some songs practically scream Dance Hall Vomit.
Where else do you find an ode to alcohol, or talking to a cop about chewing chocolate that the doggy dropped, or the love song that doesn't give a fuck about the fbi? And a dispute on t-shirt sales - that one is custom made for Guitar Hero if I ever heard a song made for Guitar Hero this is the one.

The Fillmore, San Francisco 12/30/08
Wow, it sounds like this was truly the show of the year. Fog and 3 screens and 2 hours of Butthole Surfers. I can't spend too much time thinking about it or I'll feel depressed the rest of 2009 knowing that I couldn't figure out a way to get out there to witness new years eve 08/09 with Gibby.
Here are some photos from the show.

Locust Abortion Technician
While opinions differ over which is the greatest Butthole Surfer album, this review stands firm with Locust Abortion Technician as the winner. The review is well written and amply describes the experience of listening to it for the first time (though you need not be on acid to fully experience its extremities). This truly is a record that is unlike any other since or ever will be. Play it loud and often, and be free of mainstream anything for the rest of your life. And as a bonus, it has clowns and a puppy on the cover!

Rush Limbaugh Mystery
Once, purportedly in 1991 Rush Limbaugh said that he banned Gibby Haynes from his show. However, the video on youtube that showed this is no longer available. If anybody has it, I would love to post it.
Here are two posts about the incident:
